Is more frequent bathing good for a really stinky dog?

A smelly dog is no fun to have around the house. And when really horrible stench is wafting up from the fuzzy one who wants to be in your lap, into the tub he goes! But is this the right thing to do in all cases? If your beloved pet has been outside and rolled in something obscene, that’s one thing. Bathe him, for sure! But if he has a skin problem that might be causing the stench, bathing might not be the answer.

Seborrhea is a skin disorder in which the outer layers of the skin, the sebaceous glands, and the follicles are over-productive, leading to dull fur, dry flakiness, and smelly oiliness. This sebum, which becomes rancid, is the source of the odor. Frequent bathing, especially with a harsh shampoo, can irritate the skin and make this condition much worse. If your dog is smellier than normal, or is also showing signs of flakiness, seborrhea is indicated.
